Recognition of Geons

چکیده
This paper presents a novel approach to the detection and recognition of qualitative parts like geons from real 2D intensity images. Previous works relied on semi-local properties of either line drawings or good region segmentation. Here, in the framework of Model-Based Opti-misation, whole geons or substantial sub-parts are recognised by tting parametric deformable contour models to the edge image by means of a Maximum A Posteriori estimation performed by Adaptive Simulated Annealing, accounting for image clutter and limited occlusions. A number of experiments, carried out both on synthetic and real edge images, are presented.

Parametric geons: a discrete set of shapes with parameterized attributes
We propose parametric geons as a volumetric description of object components for qualitative object recognition. Parametric geons are seven qualitative shape types deened by parameterized equations which control the size and degree of tapering and bending. The models provide global shape constraints which make model recovery procedures robust against noise and minor variations in object shape. ...
متن کاملEffects of geon deletion, scrambling, and movement on picture recognition in pigeons.
E. A. Wasserman, K. Kirkpatrick-Steger, L. J. Van Hamme, and I. Biederman (1993) demonstrated that scrambling an object's parts or "geons" (I. Biederman, 1987) produced marked reductions in the pigeon's picture recognition accuracy, indicating that discriminative responding to pictures is controlled by more than simple particulate features. The present effort was designed to further assess the ...
متن کاملRepresent and Detect Geons by Joint Statistics of Steerable Pyramid Decomposition
We present a parametric method to represent and detect geons. The parameters are extracted from joint statistical constraints de ned on complex wavelet transform. We rst review how steerable pyramid may be used in multi-scale multiorientation image decomposition. Then, four stages of object recognition theory is adopted to support the choice of joint statistical constraints, which characterize ...
متن کاملSeeing things from a different angle: the pigeon's recognition of single geons rotated in depth.
In 2 experiments involving computer-rendered versions of single shapes or "geons," the extent to which depth rotation affects the visual discrimination performance of pigeons in both go/no-go and forced-choice tasks was documented. The pigeons were able to recognize geons at most rotations in depth; however, the pigeons' recognition performance was better at the training view than at most other...
